Candle burning is used in many cultures and religions to celebrate special occasions. We decorate our homes with candles and doing this is highly renowned for influencing our emotional state.  Unfortunately, it is also known for causing fires when safety isn’t considered.  Knowing candle safety is so important and simple steps taken can prevent a huge loss.

Candle safety 101 is the responsibility of everyone who chooses to burn a candle.  These six simple steps can help make sure you and your family are safe when burning candles:

  1. Don’t walk away
  2. Secure the area
  3. Keep from kids and pets
  4. Avoid drafts and vents
  5. Don’t touch or move
  6. Keep candles 3” apart

Make sure to keep up with the maintenance of candles such as keeping the candle wax pool clean, keeping the wick trimmed (approx. ¼ inch), watching for cracks in your candle container, and don’t let your candle wax get too low (approx. ¼ inch from bottom).

Extinguishing your candles should be done with a candle snuffer as it is the safest way to prevent hot wax from splattering.  Remember don’t use water to extinguish your candle and make sure the wick ember is not glowing. The candle container will remain hot for awhile so be careful not to move the candle until it has completely cooled.

Be sure to check out this great video by the National Candle Association that has some additional tips in helping you enjoy burning your candles and also keeping you and your loved ones safe.  I hope I helped make “scents” of fire safety so you can enjoy burning our candles.
